Amnesty India itself has been targeted by authorities, and human rights activists have been demonised in government speeches and media. Proposed amendments to the Information and Technology Act will require providers to take down any content deemed inappropriate, thereby threatening to limit political discussion. The National Security Act has been used to arrest human rights defenders and journalists, with three of the latter killed in mysterious circumstances in March 2018.
